The Dangers of Prolonged Sitting and Standing: A Study Reveals the Negative Health Effects of Both

Thursday, January 12, 2023

According to a recent study published in Human Factors, the Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society prolonged standing at work can lead to significant muscle fatigue, as well as other health problems such as leg cramps, backaches, and varicose veins. This can negatively impact job performance and lead to more serious joint problems over time. The study found that workers who stood all day experienced muscle fatigue regardless of age or gender. About half of all employees worldwide are required to stand for more than 75 percent of the workday. However, the study's lead researcher, Bernard Martin, an associate professor at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, notes that while standing desks are a popular trend in offices, more research needs to be done to provide recommendations to employers. He suggests that the best solution is a combination of sitting and standing, if possible. It is important to note that our bodies were not designed for work that requires sitting or standing all day and it strains our muscle system in a way it wasn't designed for.
